Former Great Plains Software Dexterity was designed as a core of Great Plains Dynamics: programming shell, DB independence layer, Integrated Development Environment (EDI) – however this design was performed back in earlier 1990th, so you may imagine that software customization, development and programming goals, pitfalls and priorities shifted. In this small article we will try to orient you in how you should consider your current Microsoft Dexterity modification upgrade, what are dex pluses and minuses from contemporary programmer standpoint:

o OOP or object oriented programming. If you look back to programming concept developing in 1980th and earlier 1990th – you will find that those days procedural programming as prevailing and object oriented programming was already invented but not yet implemented into “mass production”. Dexterity is rather procedural scripting language, which was written in C programming language in its turn. Later on in late 1990th GPS tried to switch dex to OOP, when Great Plains decided to develop from scratch its own Purchase Order module (and not to purchase and incorporate Intellisol Advanced Purchase Order Processing/Project Accounting), however it was rather too complicated and later on the idea lost its support

o Dexterity vs eConnect programming balancing. eConnect has certain level of OOP, however it has to deal with Dexterity restrictions on the database level (dex primary keys, DEX_ROW_ID columns, etc). eConnect also lacks posting functionality – and this is understandable – GP design leaves batches posting to be in GP operator hands

o Extender from eOne. This is another nice module, where you can abstract yourself from dex and at the same time introduce new functionality in GP. However if you plan to bring “life” to your new custom screens – you should consider doing so via Dex sanscripts, attached to your Extender project. In other words – you are back in the realm of Dexterity – either you use Dex IDE or Extender – the programming duty is still there

o Integration. In our opinion dex is slowly abandoning the scene of GP integrations, leaving the way to eConnect and earlier it was giving it up to pure SQL stored procedures

o Reporting. Great Plains ReportWriter is pure dex application and it has real problems to provide flexibility to GP reporting. This is why we see the help from Crystal Reports (was recommended up to GP version 8.0) and later on MS SQL Server Reporting Services

Kenneth Volk is truly one of the biggest names in the wine industry and the vineyard that bears his name certain lives up to the expectations that come with that.

Most people within the wine industry would assume that the winery which bears his name was the project that made him famous, although a good guess, you’d be wrong. Volk established Wild Horse Winery in 1981 and built it’s production from 600 cases a year until he sold the winery in 2003 when it was producing a massive 150,000 cases on a yearly basis.

Using part of the proceeds from the sale, Volk purchased Byron Winery and renamed it after himself. This new project tops out at 15,000 cases and allows Volk to employ more hands on techniques and craft truly world class wine.

So what type of wine has made Volk famous? A decade ago you might have trouble guessing, but with the huge success of the movie Sideways you’d probably guess, Pinot Noir. If you did, you’d be correct.

In many ways Volk has found a perfect location to produce world class Pinot Noir. The warm days in California when combined with cooler nights provide perhaps the perfect growing conditions for Pinot Noir. Unlike many other grape varieties, Pinot Noir needs cooler night time temperatures to recover acidity otherwise the wines can appear unbalanced. However, without warmer day time temperatures the grape variety does not reach full ripeness, which leads to a completely uninteresting wine.

So why should you try a wine from Kenneth Volk Vineyards? They are crafting some truly quality, world class wines at affordable prices. Volk himself is a classic winemaker serving with distinction on such as being chairman of the board of the Paso Robles Vintners and Growers Association, Chair of the Calpoly San Luis Obispo Encology Council etc etc etc. In many ways Volk is one of the most important individuals when it comes to the improvement and widening appeal of Pinot Noir outside of Burgundy. I think it is also important to note that Volk is one of the most unassuming and likeable winemakers you’re likely to meet. He is happy to take the time to speak with anyone and explain his winemaking practices as well as anything you’d like to know about the fruit or his winery. This is exactly the type of innovative winemaker that I like to support and encourage him to continue crafting these world class wines.

For those of you out there that shovel down mass amounts of chicken daily without a thought of where the chicken came from and what went into the production I was also one of you very recently. Over the days I had heard stories about the horrible farming methods but tried to just block it of my mind and kept consuming. I just rolled along with the out of mind out of sight though process. My thinking was really challenged when I finally realized that the conditions the animals endured also had a residual effect on the quality of the meat.

It sounds selfish but I began to care when I realized that the meat I ingested had an impact on my body. Before this realization the thought had never crossed my mind of antibiotics, hormones, and living conditions having residual effects on my body from eating the crap.

So reluctantly I began purchasing free range organic chicken breast for 6.99 per pound. But let me tell you there is a huge difference in taste, appearance, and overall enjoy ability of each chicken breast. A free range organic chicken breast compared to a factory farmed chicken breast is like comparing a filet mignon to a top sirloin. That is how much of a difference there is, but if you ate top sirloin your whole life than you would never know any different.

When you eat organic meat you will notice your body processing the meat much faster. And common sense tells me the if my body is having an easier time processing the meat than it is also absorbing proteins and amino acids easier.

I also want to point out the taste and appearance difference. Free range organic meat just tastes better than conventional meat. It is juicier and has the light natural pink that chicken is supposed to have. As a bodybuilder, taste is never our first concern, we just want the results. I’ll choke down just about anything if it is going to give me an edge but in this case price is what you are going to have to choke down with organic free range chicken being about $4.00 more per pound. But if you can afford it than it is definitely worth it and you will reap the benefits.

When it comes to making a healthy/morally conscious decisions, meat is my number 1 concern. When I sit back and destroy a pound of the most quality free range organic chicken I can find, I get a very satisfied feeling. Pleasure hits my taste buds and I know my body’s digestion is churning through the meat. To top if off I know the feathery little guy I just ate had a good life, paradise compared to others.

I am a happy fan. My favorite team, the Phoenix Mercury, recently won the Women’s National Basketball Association title. As I watched the games, I was mostly caught up in the excitement of cheering for the home team. But the following day, I thought about how these gifted athletes provided a lesson in winning on and off the court.

Each Mercury player is extremely talented. But any sports fan knows that individual talent is not what wins team championships. You must be able to work together as a highly tuned unit. I watched in awe as the Mercury ran, passed and took shots with the elegance of a tightly choreographed Broadway production.

That is not to say that everything is pretty. These gals were knocked on the butts, took elbows to the face, only to charge forward and muscle their way to the hoop to make shots, grab rebounds, or block shots by their worthy opponents, the Indiana Fever.

I don’t know all the injuries that took place, but I know for sure that Penny Taylor was playing with a broken finger and had a tooth knocked loose in an earlier game. Cappie Poindexter was whacked in the eye and had to leave the game because she couldn’t see. Fortunately, Cappie had no severe optical damage and she returned with a vengeance, knocking in important buckets at crucial times, in spite of a swollen black eye. Diana Taurasi always plays like it’s the last minute of her life. I don’t know what injuries she sustained, but the way she attacks the game, I’m sure returns home with more than her fair share of cuts and bruises.

As I was taking a walk the day after the championship, I thought about how the game mirrored life. These gals were knocked down, beaten up, and yet they kept on driving forward. They didn’t let losses, pain, the possibility of significant injury or any other factor deter them from their goal. When I saw Cappie Poindexter return to the court, I actually winced. I thought about her eye and all those flying elbows. I was really concerned about her welfare. And then, as if she could read my thoughts, she answered by swishing a basket with nothing but net.

The point is, we all face hardships. And we all will be knocked on our butts from time to time. We can boldly move ahead, tip toe with caution, or cower in a corner. The choice is ours. But winners, whether on or off the court, are not timid about living.

To bring this back to a personal level, as I was thinking about the game, and what I was going to write about it, I passed a neighbor and her dog. We exchanged “Good mornings” without breaking stride. I passed the woman on her left (the dog was on her right), then her German Shepherd turned around and bit me on my thigh.

This was quite a shock to me as I did not step to pet the dog, I was in a good, not fearful mood, and I didn’t do anything to provoke an attack. I informed the woman her dog had just bitten me. I quickly learned the dog was up to date on her shots, had never bitten anyone before. Lucky me. If I were going to be the first for something I would prefer something less painful.

Anyway, the owner, a nurse, told me how to care for the wound and I left. I suppose I should have collected her name and phone number, but I was more concerned about taking care of the business at hand. Fortunately, everything is fine. It was more of a bruise than a puncture, my tetanus shot is up to date, and I’m going to be fine.

But the next day I didn’t want to go for a walk.

Then I thought about the Phoenix Mercury. What if Penny Taylor, who knocked in 14 points in the final game, decided to sit the game out and nurse her wounds? What would have happened if Cappie Poindexter decided to go shopping to find a pair of sunglasses to hide her shiner instead of courageously racking up 24 points? Who could have predicted the outcome if Diana Taurasi said, “enough is enough” and headed for the hot tub instead of driving to the basket?

And I’d be neglect in my duties if I didn’t mention the outstanding contributions of the entire roster of DeWanna Bonner, Temeka Johnson, Nicole Ohlde, Brooke Smith, Tangela Smith, Le’Coe Willingham and Ketia Swanier.

It is easy to be optimistic when everything is going great. The true strength of one’s character is how one reacts to adversity. One of my favorite lines from the movie, “A League of Their Own” when baseball star, Dottie Hinson, wants to quit the team.

Jimmy Dugan: Shit, Dottie, if you want to go back to Oregon and make a hundred babies, great, I’m in no position to tell anyone how to live. But sneaking out like this, quitting, you’ll regret it for the rest of your life. Baseball is what gets inside you. It’s what lights you up, you can’t deny that.

Dottie Hinson: It just got too hard.

Jimmy Dugan: It’s supposed to be hard! If it wasn’t hard, everyone would do it. The hard is what makes it great.

We all may wish for an easy life, but if we think back to the things that we are the most proud of, it is not the easy wins, it’s the times where we struggled and won that bring us the most satisfaction. So, I’m going to end this story now and go look for my shoes. It’s time to take a walk.

History of the Guitar

The human race has always had a love for music hardwired into our circuits. Ancient humans discovered long ago that magical sounds pleasing to the ears could be made from vibrating strings. The earliest record of stringed instruments takes us back to as early as the days of King David, (the Jewish king), in the BC era of ancient Israel.

Stringed instruments such as the lute or mandolin were used by traveling early musicians called “minstrels” as early the 14th century in Europe, and they would entertain the crowds by playing their unique compositions in the community market places. Later other musical instruments were invented that combined and made up our earliest orchestras. Even in modern times we are still interested in these early forms of the stringed instruments.

Rock star “Sting” has recently released a CD compilation of 16th century lute music. American band REM has often featured a mandolin in their music performances. The Rod Stewart hit, “Maggie May” also featured the unique classical sound of the mandolin. The mandolin is also still a common sound in today’s country music genre.

Every culture on earth has a version of the forerunner of the modern guitar. African and Far Eastern and Middle Eastern cultures have several versions of stringed musical instruments, some with only three strings. Here in America, the banjo has become very popular in country and folk music. The guitar was used here in the US back in the early days of our history and in the Western Cowboy culture long before it became popular for jazz, blues, and then eventually becoming the featured instrument of every rock and roll band.

Western rock music has also blended the Sitar, a stringed instrument originating from the Middle East, first heard in a pop song performed by The Beatles with Norwegian Wood. And we cannot forget to acknowledge the huge contribution that the music of Spain and Latin America has made to classical guitar music.

Many of the most loved compositions in classical music have been written for a stringed orchestra or string ensemble. The violin, viola and cello continue to work very well together in string musical instrument pieces. The double fretless bass is very versatile and can be found in jazz bands, orchestras and in bluegrass rockabilly bands.

A popular string instrument often used in rock, country and folk music is the violin or “fiddle”. The fiddle is known as the traditional iconic symbol of Irish, jigs and reels. Jazz artists such as Darryl Way and Jean Luc Ponty are very accomplished violinists and performers. The radical guitarist Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin, has even used a violin bow with his electric guitar in a sort of “Violin meets Guitar” experimental sound.

Modern stringed instruments can be ordered from the factories with custom fitted electric pickups to amplify the sound, to fit in with any style of music. Violins or Fiddles, are now made as an electric guitar with the ability to synthesis sounds and use special effects to create very unique results in some popular rock and county music songs.

Keyboard instruments such as the piano, clavichord, and harpsichord are actually considered stringed musical instruments as well because they have strings, which are struck by hammers. Some even consider the piano, a percussion instrument. Today the Electronic Piano Keyboard has become synthesized and can produce sounds sampled and digitally reproduced in small compact keyboards with weighted keys and other features that closely duplicate the sound of traditional large Grand Pianos. Full stringed orchestra sounds can be selected to blend with other wind and percussion instrument sounds to produce a full concert hall orchestra sound with this one amazing little instrument. These are often referred to as “Workstations”.

All of the modern versions of the Guitar and other old world stringed instruments, are still used today in a range of sounds that are quite awesome to listen to, and to perform with as a musician. Fiddle music for instance…can cause your foot to start tapping, and a good guitar player may cause involuntary hand clapping. Add percussion to this mix and you may feel the urge to get up and dance. On the other hand… a softly flowing cello solo may cause you to “tear up” as featured in the new movie…”The Soloist”.

Whether your favorite Guitar Music is composed along with other stringed instruments, or is being synthesised through computer based software, or in analog form and unplugged, All of our personal music favorites, still can express many things much better than we as humans can say in mere words alone. The Soundtracks of many movies have proven to entertain audiences with very little spoken dialog such as the western: “The Good Bad and the Ugly”, but with a very compelling music dialog… We get the message!

Yeah… I can hear that unmistakable tune in my head right now as well!

All that being said…there is still nothing quite as sweet as the traditional sound of a live orchestra of violins, cellos, stringed bass, and a Grand piano in a concert hall filled with avid fans of great instrumental music.

So… with today’s overwhelming popularity of the Guitar and all of the awesome music it has created… hopefully we will always remember it’s ancient, and old world beginnings.

Microsoft Dynamics GP serves vide spectrum of industries, and likely that very large percentage of Great Plains customers deploy Sales Order Processing module, especially if they also carry Inventory control and need Invoice or Sales Order itemization. In out-of-the-box Dynamics GP you should be able to setup basic commission schema for your sales persons and even sales territories, however real life is often different and requires commissions to be accrued on very complex rules. We would like to come through some commission calculation formulas and give you technical highlights:

1. Credit Card related Sales commission calculations. As credit card processor has in turn its own commission, you likely are trying to discourage your sales reps to sell on credit card. Instead, you probably encourage your sales folks to incline customer to send overnight checks or do wire transfers. However in eCommerce scenarios credit cards are often the only way to work with walk in customers and you got to accept credit cards. Complications with credit card acceptance business might be related to the gradation on preferred and less desirable credit card networks. In this scenario you would like to build sales commission report with credit card fees subtracted from the sales amount, subject to commissions

2. Project completion commission schemas. These are when you are having your sales people to be responsible for the project delivery, including manufacturing overhead and associated purchases. In this scenario you would like to calculate commission for delivered projects, meaning invoices, which are not yet delivered in the sense of production orders and drop ship purchases should be placed on hold

3. Other sales commission schemas. These might be related to sales quota for the quarter or month, discounted items versus cash cow items differentiation, just to give your real life scenarios, which would be difficult to implement in standard Dynamics GP functionality

4. How commission logic might be implemented. In our opinion, Dynamics GP, being targeted for mid-size and smaller businesses makes it feasible to do commission on reporting level with following reports results data entry into either AP or Payroll module for commission disbursement

5. Technology insights. Commission reports should be based on complex commission calculation SQL stored procedure or view. Reporting tool might one of the industry standards: Crystal Reports, SQL Server Reporting Services, Excel, Microsoft Access, Great Plains Dexterity, C# or VB.Net report web publishing

Biofuels. What a great name! It just sounds green. Looking around I see a proliferation of Biodiesel bumper stickers everywhere I look. In my home state of Oregon all filling stations will be required to add at least 10 % ethanol to all gasoline by next year. Environmentalists are cheering as politicians and the media are jumping onto the Biofuel bandwagon. Sounds like a big win for the environment and society – think again, in reality Biofuels are much more brown than they are green.

Here are five reasons why Biofuels may actually be harmful for the environment:

  • 1. Biofuels are so profitable that rain forest, the most efficient absorber of greenhouse gases, is being cut or burned to grow grains and sugarcane to make ethanol or Biodiesel.
  • 2. Farmers growing highly profitable Biofuel crops are looking for the fastest growth and biggest yields and use heavy amounts of chemical fertilizer; which strips key micronutrients out of our increasingly scarce topsoil, and the nitrogen-rich runoff causes massive algae growth that destroys our streams, rivers and lakes.
  • 3. Because Biofuels are more profitable than food crops large amounts of prime farmland is being devoted to Biofuel production creating grain shortages and increasing the price of grain products, especially in third world countries.
  • 4. Although Biofuels emit less greenhouse gases per gallon than petroleum fuels they still emit significant amounts. Biofuels are also less fuel-efficient. In my vehicle mileage drops substantially when I use a fuel containing ethanol. So, overall Biofuels do not reduce greenhouse emissions nearly as much as claimed.
  • ?

  • 5. This is perhaps the most important reason. To permanently solve both the energy crisis and eliminate greenhouse gas emissions we will have to move away from consumable fuels to toward energy sources that do not consume fuel, emit heat or produce pollutants. At the moment electricity is the cleanest energy source available and companies are beginning to develop and produce powerful electric cars that can go a few hundred miles on a charge. For these vehicles to be practical we will need to establish charging stations in every town and alongside every highway. This requires a massive transition from filling stations to charging stations. The use of Biofuels will perpetuate the existing infrastructure of filling stations and delay the transition to charging stations. The longer we delay this transition the more greenhouse gases will be released into our atmosphere.

At this point some of you might be wondering why our political leadership and big business is so supportive of Biofuels – yet they never even mention electric vehicles. It might be worth your time to see the movie “Who Killed the Electric Car”, which is available on DVD. Click Here to go to their website.

To begin with most big grain producers are large corporate farms with a strong lobbying presence in Washington and a history of making campaign contributions to politicians that support their agendas. Biofuels are big business for these companies.

The auto industry also is heavily involved in politics, lobbying efforts, and campaign contributions. These companies have a big investment in continuing to make internal combustion engines that burn fuels. Moving to electric motors will require major retrofitting for these companies. Biofuels allow them to avoid making this investment.

The petroleum industry has perhaps the most to gain from the implementation of Biofuels. They know that the public will eventually demand a move away from petroleum. All the other solutions will take business away from them. However, they will be refining and distributing Biofuels just like they do with petroleum – and crude Biofuels are cheaper too. So, the petroleum industry stands to make a great deal of money from the distribution of Biofuels.

The petroleum industry makes huge campaign contributions to certain politicians. They have been successful at having many of their supporters and former executives elected and appointed to the highest levels of power in our current administration. It is not surprising that our political leaders are embracing Biofuels.

The solution to both the energy crisis and pollution is to transition to non-consumable fuels. This means solar, geothermal, wind and tidal energy production of electricity. Even nuclear energy could be a viable alternative if spent fuel can be safely transported out of the Earth’s atmosphere using the low-cost rocket technologies recently developed. All of these kinds of energy production are already in use and are becoming cheaper and more efficient every day. We have not yet begun to see the economies of scale and innovation that will make this kind of energy production much cheaper the more that it is developed and used.

At this very moment several companies are planning massive solar energy installations in Arizona, which is beginning to be called the Silicon Valley or Middle East of Solar energy production. Huge wind farms are being planned for the Plains states. We could be only years away from a massive transition to electric vehicles. For this to be successful we need to get big business and our political leadership to focus on this transition. This will take a lot longer if we allow them to remain focused on Biofuels instead.

When comparing non-consumable energy sources to fuel based energy production remember that all fuels must be transported to where they are sold. The transportation of fuels burns more fuel – so these transportation costs must be figured into the numbers used for greenhouse gas emissions and energy efficiency. Distribution of electricity does involve some energy loss, but it is fractional compared to how much energy is used to transport fuel and does not emit greenhouse gases.

Some of you might be wondering why I have not mentioned hydrogen fuel cells. There are three reasons why: 1. Hydrogen combustion still produces heat, 2. Our engineers still have not figured out how to produce hydrogen without using large amounts of energy to do it, and 3. The other renewal energy sources mentioned earlier have already moved beyond the experimental stage and are in real-world use.
